Yahoo Boys Protest over Arrest Of Their Members By EFCC

Some youths who were said to be internet fraudsters popularly known as ‘Yahoo boys’, have on Tuesday took to the street in Ilesa, Osun State, to protest against the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) over the arrest of some of their members.

The youths took their protest to the Ilesa West Local Government Secretariat were they burnt tyres thereby blocking entrance to the secretariat.

The protest spreaded to other parts of Ilesa town thus leading to many commuters stranded while shop owners could not display their wares.

The protesters claimed that EFCC operatives raided and arrested some of their colleagues in a hotel.

A police officer who spoke to Dailytrust on condition of anonymity, expressed shock that the Yahoo boys who were internet fraudsters could come out openly to protest against the anti-graft commission.

He said, “We know these boys as internet fraudsters that people call “Yahoo Yahoo”, and it’s a big surprise that they have the audacity to stage a public protest.”

EFCC spokesman, Wilson Uwaujaren, could not be reached as he was not picking calls when our correspondent called for his reaction.

The state’s police spokesman, Yemisi Opalola, said policemen had been deployed to douse the tension and assured that the situation would be brought under control.

Despite the rigorous manhaunt of fraudsters by the anti-graft operatives, internet fraud in nigeria is still on skyrocketive increase on daily basis. Many are of the view that the rate of inrease of internet fraudsters is directly proportional to the high rate of employment in the country.
